Once upon a time, in the lush land of Kerala, there lived a great king named Maveli. He was known throughout the land for his incredible generosity, wisdom, and strength. Maveli was not just a great king but also a great warrior who had won many battles and had become renowned for his valour. He was fearless and unstoppable in battle, which made him feared by his enemies and respected by his people.

One day, the gods became envious of Maveli's growing power, and Lord Vishnu, disguised as a dwarf named Vamana, approached him, asking for three steps of land. Maveli , being the generous king he was, agreed to the request without hesitation.

But as soon as Vamana took his first step, he grew in size, and his foot covered the entire earth. With his second step, he covered the skies and left no space for Maveli to give him the third step. Maveli , realising that Vamana was no ordinary dwarf, offered his head for the third step, which Vamana accepted and pushed him down to the underworld.

Maveli , accepted his fate with a smile, knowing that he had always lived his life with the values of generosity, kindness, and compassion. He was content with the knowledge that his people were happy and prosperous under his rule, and that was all that mattered to him.

Years passed, and on the day of the Onam festival, Maveli was allowed to return to Kerala to visit his people and bless them with prosperity and happiness. His people welcomed him with open arms, and the land was filled with joy and celebration. People decorated their homes with flowers, prepared delicious food, and participated in traditional dances and games.

Maveli , being the kind and generous king that he was, blessed his people with abundance and prosperity, and his visit was celebrated for ten days, which became known as the festival of Onam. It is said that Maveli's spirit still roams the land of Kerala, and every year, he returns to bless his people with happiness and prosperity.
